Answers to the most common questions about WinTagEnter, licensing and supported hardware.
Open the Command Prompt and run whoami.
This shows the exact Windows account you are currently logged in with.
If the result starts with MicrosoftAccount\ and contains your email address,
it is a real Microsoft account. In this case, use the full email address as the username.
If the result is in the format PCNAME\something, it is a local Windows account.
Even if it looks like an email (e.g., PCNAME\user@outlook.com),
it is still a local account. In this case, use only the something part as the username.
You can also use the Logged in button directly in the WinTagEnter application, which automatically reads and fills in the correct username for you.
No. WinTagEnter is fully on‑premise. All credentials are stored locally on the device using DPAPI encryption. No passwords or login data are ever sent to any server.
WinTagEnter works with readers that operate as a virtual COM port. A complete list of supported readers is available here: Supported RFID Readers
Logging is disabled by default. To enable it, create an empty file named log.txt in the following directory:
%PROGRAMDATA%\WinTagEnter\
To disable logging again, simply delete the log.txt file. No restart is required.
WinTagEnter logs only two types of events:
Each UNLOCK entry contains:
Example UNLOCK entry:
2026‑04‑20 09:43:12 UNLOCK: user=DOMAIN\Novak tag=04A1B23C note=Karta skladník 1
Example LOCK entry:
2026‑04‑20 09:50:12 LOCK
No passwords, credential data or sensitive information are ever logged.
The App Lock restricts full access to the application.
When enabled, only authorized users can open or use the app.
Resetting the lock requires deleting the license file (usk.key).
Deleting the license also removes all stored tags, which must be configured again after restoring the license.
Yes, but only locally and encrypted using DPAPI (LocalMachine). The password never leaves the device and is never transmitted to any server.
Ensure that the device appears as a COM port in Windows Device Manager. If needed, install the appropriate drivers (FTDI, Prolific, Microchip CDC). Details are available on the Supported Readers page.
